This manual will help you replace a cracked or dysfunctional iPhone 8 display.  If your new LCD assembly includes an earpiece speaker, front-facing camera and LCD panel bracket, simply replace it and reinstall the home button.

In the near future we will also prepare a manual for transferring these components, if they are not included.

However, when replacing the LCD assembly on iPhone 8 it is necessary to install the old home button into the new assembly, to ensure that the Touch ID function will work.

Opening the iPhone 8 will compromise the waterproof seal under the display.  If you won’t replace it, your device will function, without being waterproof.

Step 1Pentalobe screws

Before you begin, discharge the iPhone under 25%. A fully charged battery may catch fire or explode.

  • Turn off your iPhone.

Opening the iPhone 8 will compromise the waterproof seal under the display.  If you won’t replace it, your device will function, without being waterproof.

  • Remove the two 3,5 mm pentalobe screws located at the bottom of your iPhone.

Step 2Opening the device 1

  • Create a small gap between the display and rare cover.
  • Insert a pick into the gap.

Waterproof adhesive, which secures the display in place, is very strong and therefore creating this gap requires a considerable amount of strength. If necessary, move the display upwards and downwards to loosen it, and create enough space for a spudger.

  • Slide the pick inserted into the gap, gently along the bottom left edge of the iPhone. Gently tilt the pick, to enlarge the gap.
  • Slide the pick to the left side of the device, moving up and down all the way to the volume buttons.

Do not move the pick all the way to the upper side of the display, as this could damage the plastic clips, which secure it.

Step 3Opening the device 2

  • Lift the display and open the iPhone.

Do not lift up the display into a more than 15° angle, as this part is still attached to the cover with thin flat cables, that could easily damage.

  • Insert a pick into the gap on the upper side of the device, to compromise the remaining layer of adhesive.

Be careful, not to damage the plastic clips on the edge of the phone.

Step 4Opening the device 3

  • Gently pull on the opened display downwards, to unclick it from the plastic clips on top of the device.
  • Open the iPhone by leaning it to the right, as when opening a book.

Do not try to completely separate the display assembly, as it is still attached with fragile cables.

Step 5Disconnecting the battery

  • Remove the four Philips screws, which secure the bottom display cable bracket.
    • two 1,3 mm screws
    • two 2,8 mm screws

Make sure that you return the screws to their original place when reassembling, to avoid damaging the device.

  • Remove the display cable bracket.

Step 6Disconnecting the battery connector

  • Use the tip of a spudger and lift the battery connector from its place on the motherboard.

Tilt the interconnecting cable outside of the device, to avoid electrical contact with its other parts.

Step 7Display assembly

Before you continue, make sure that the battery is disconnected.

  • Use a spudger and disconnect the bottom display connectors by prying up from the motherboard.

When reconnecting the cables, press down on the sides until you hear a click. Do not press down in the middle, as this could cause permanent damage. If you see any white lines through the display or the touchscreen is not responding, make sure that this cable is connected properly.

Step 8Separating the display assembly

  • Unscrew the three 1,3 mm Philips screws, which secure the front panel connector bracket. Remove the bracket. Disconnect the connector from its place on the motherboard and remove from the phone.

This connector should likewise be reconnected by pressing down on sides to avoid damage.

  • Separate the display assembly.

Step 9Home button/Touch ID sensor

  • Remove the four Y000 screws, which secure the bracket above the Home/Touch ID sensor:
    • one 1,2 mm screw
    • three 1,3 mm screws
  • Remove the sensor bracket.

Step 10Disconnecting the Home Button cable connector

  • Unclick the home button cable connector from the left.

If the whole connector begins to lift without separating, press down the bottom cable using a spudger and continuously unclick the top part. Take extra care not to damage the connector or cable as this could permanently damage the sensor.

Step 11Removing the Home/Touch ID sensor

  • Heat up the surroundings of the home/Touch ID sensor using a hairdryer for approximately 90 second. This will allow easier removal from its place, by softening the adhesive.

Do not overheat the display. Use the hairdryer only until it feels comfortable to hold it.

  • Use a pick to gently detach the home/Touch ID sensor cable from the display assembly.
  • Remove the whole home/Touch ID sensor gently from the front side.

When reinstalling, proceed in reversed order and put the cable through the hole in the display assembly, and reinstall the new assembly into the device.
