iPhone batteries retain 80% capacity for about 500 charges, or 18-24 months for average use. Post this period, iPhones charge more often and may slow down, as indicated by iOS. Follow this guide to replace the battery and boost performance.

Important information before replacing the battery

1. Drain the iPhone to below 25% as a fully charged Li-ion battery can catch fire or explode if its protective layers are accidentally breached.

2. Opening your iPhone will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

3. Wear protective glasses to prevent eye injury during the repair.

4. Organize screws during the repair to prevent mixing them up, which could lead to damage to the iPhone by using the wrong screw in a thread.

5. After replacing the battery, a message "Important Message" will be displayed on the screen.

  • The message simply informs that the original battery has been replaced with a new one.

  • The message has no impact on the device's performance.

  • It appears on the lock screen for 4 days, then in the settings.

This is caused by the battery replacement not being authorized by Apple's official software, and the part was not paired with the motherboard.

Apple trying to achieve to ensure that users have their devices repaired at authorized service centers, which use original Apple parts, accessories, and software.

Tips for Getting Started

Highlight 3 mm on the pick or card.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm, as you could damage internal components.

If your iPhone's display is cracked, cover it with adhesive tape to prevent injuries during the repair.

If you are unable to attach the suction cup in the following steps, use a strong piece of tape (such as duct tape) and lift the screen.

Do not put your iPhone in the microwave!!

Step 1
Power down and ensure battery safety

To prepare for iPhone 14 Plus disassembly, power it down and ensure the battery is under 25% to reduce fire hazards.

1. Turn off the iPhone.
2. Remove the two 6.75 mm pentalobe screws at the bottom with a Pentalobe PL1(0.8mm) screwdriver.

Remember, opening the device will compromise its water resistance. Have a replacement seal ready, as your iPhone won’t be waterproof without it.

Step 2
Heat the bottom edge to remove rear glass

To remove the rear glass from your iPhone 14 Plus, apply heat to the bottom edge using a hair dryer or heat gun. Warm it for 90 seconds, or until it's quite warm to the touch. Be cautious not to overheat any area by keeping the hair dryer moving constantly.

Step 3
Open the iPhone's rear glass using suction cups

There are two common methods to open the iPhone's rear glass. The first method involves using a suction cup, and the second, a specialized securing tool which is considered to be a safer option.
In this guide we will use the suction cup method:
1.    To ensure a safe opening of the iPhone, position suction cups near the bottom edge-one on the front and another on the back—and press down gently to secure them.
2.    If you're using just one suction cup, place it on the bottom edge of the phone's rear glass, avoiding the glass edge to prevent damage.
3.    Hold your phone firmly and pull on the suction cup to create a small gap between the rear glass and the phone's frame.
4.    Once the gap is created and has around 3mm, insert a tip (around 3mm) of a plastic pick or a thin card into the gap.

The rear glass is secured with strong adhesive, so applying significant force is necessary to start prying it open. If it's challenging, reapply heat to the bottom edge and carefully move the rear glass up and down to soften the adhesive. Continue until there's enough space to slide in the card.

Step 4
Heat the left side of the rear glass

Heat the left side of the iPhone’s rear glass, using a hair dryer or heat gun. Aim for about 90 seconds or until the screen is too hot to touch.

Step 5
Loosen the adhesive on the left side

Insert the pick or card at the bottom left corner and carefully slide it up to the top left corner, loosening the adhesive along the way.

Be cautious not to push the pick or card in more than 3 mm to avoid damaging the iPhone's internal parts.

Step 6
Heat the right side of the rear glass

Heat the right side of the iPhone, where the power button is, using a hair dryer or heat gun. Aim for about 90 seconds or until the screen is too hot to touch.

A delicate cable runs along the right edge of your iPhone. Do not insert your pick in this area to avoid damaging the cable!

Step 7
Disconnecting the wireless charging cable

Insert the pick or card at the bottom right corner and carefully slide it up to the top right corner, loosening the adhesive along the way.

Be cautious not to push the pick or card in more than 3 mm to avoid damaging the iPhone's charging coil cable.

Step 8
Heat the top edge of the rear glass

Warm the top edge of the iPhone with a hair dryer or heat gun for around 90 seconds.
The rear glass should become very hot.

Step 9
Loosen the adhesive on the top edge

Use the pick or card to carefully loosen the adhesive at the top right corner. Slide the pick around the top-right corner and halfway across the top edge. Then, insert it underneath the top-left edge of the phone and slide it around the top-left corner, halfway across the top edge.

Be careful not to insert the pick more than 3 mm to avoid damaging or smearing the camera array!

Do not attempt to fully detach the rear glass yet, as a delicate ribbon cable connects it to the iPhone's logic board.

Step 10
Open the iPhone by flipping the rear glass

Carefully remove the suction cup/s. Open the iPhone 14 Plus by flipping the rear glass to the left, similar to opening a book.

It's important to support the rear glass during this process to prevent ripping the short charging coil flex cable.

When reassembling, place the rear glass in its original position and line up the clips along the top edge first. Gently press the top edge into place, and then proceed to secure the rest of the rear glass. If the rear glass doesn't fit easily, check the clips around the perimeter for any bends or damage before attempting again. This ensures the rear glass is attached securely and correctly.

Step 11
Remove the battery connector cover

Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the the two 1.3 mm-long screws securing the battery connector cover. Use a pair of tweezers to grasp the battery connector cover and slide it upwards (towards the A15 print) to unlatch the top hook. Then, remove the battery connector cover.

Step 12
Disconnect the battery cable

Utilize the sharp end of the spudger to detach the battery cable by lifting the connector directly upward from its socket.

Avoid damaging the black silicone seals around this and other board connections. These seals offer extra protection against water and dust.

Gently bend the connector away from the logic board to prevent accidental contact with the socket, which could power the phone during your repair.

Step 13
Disconnect the charging coil cable

Use a Y000 screwdriver to unscrew the 1 mm-long screw that fastens the charging coil connector cover.
Use a pair of tweezers to remove the charging coil connector cover.
Then, use the pointed end of a spudger to disconnect the charging coil cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket.

Step 14
Remove the rear glass assembly

Remove the rear glass assembly.

After cleaning the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%), apply new adhesive where needed.

Step 15
Prepare to remove the battery adhesive strips

There are two stretch adhesive strips securing the battery to the case, both accessible from the top edge of the battery.

Each strip features a black pull-tab at the end, lightly adhered to the battery's edge.

In the upcoming steps, you'll pull each tab gradually to stretch the adhesive beneath the battery. These adhesive strips, similar to "command strips," lose their grip when stretched, facilitating easy battery removal. If a strip breaks, remain calm—they don't always perform perfectly. Keep following the instructions.

Step 16
Lift the battery adhesive pull-tabs

Warning: Avoid poking the battery with sharp tools. Puncturing the battery could cause dangerous chemical leaks or fire!

Use blunt-nosed tweezers to carefully lift the two battery adhesive pull-tabs along the top edge of the battery.

Step 17
Pull the first adhesive strip

Gently grasp the first pull-tab with your fingers or wrap it around a spudger. Slowly pull it upwards away from the battery, towards the top of the iPhone.

1.    Apply steady pressure to maintain tension on the strip, allowing it time to stretch and release from under the battery.
2.    Ensure you hold the iPhone securely by its sides without pressing down on the battery.
3.    Keep the strip flat and smooth as you pull evenly across its entire length, avoiding pulling mainly from the middle or one side.

If the adhesive strip breaks, use your fingers or blunt tweezers to retrieve it and continue pulling gently. Avoid attempting to pry under the battery.

If a strip breaks underneath the battery and cannot be recovered, remove the other strip and proceed with the remaining steps as instructed.

Step 18
Pull the second adhesive strip

Hold the second pull-tab with your fingers or the center of a spudger, and gently pull it away from the battery towards the top of the iPhone.

1.    Follow the same steps as with the previous strip: avoid pressing down on the battery, ensure the strip remains flat and smooth, and pull at a low angle.

If the adhesive strip breaks, use your fingers or blunt tweezers to recover it and continue pulling gently. Avoid attempting to pry under the battery.

If the adhesive breaks underneath the battery and cannot be retrieved, proceed with the next step in the instructions.

Step 19
Apply isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive

If you're facing difficulty removing the battery, apply a few drops of highly concentrated (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol under the edge of the battery where the adhesive strips have broken.

Allow approximately one minute for the alcohol to weaken the adhesive. Use an opening pick or the flat end of a spudger to carefully lift the battery.

Avoid forcefully prying the battery out. If necessary, apply additional drops of alcohol to further loosen the adhesive. Never use excessive force or puncture the battery with your pry tool!

Step 20
Remove the battery

Remove the battery.

Avoid reinstalling a damaged or deformed battery due to potential safety risks!

If there is any residual alcohol solution in the phone, carefully wipe it off before installing your new battery. After reassembly, perform a force restart to prevent issues and simplify troubleshooting.
