iPhone batteries retain 80% capacity for about 500 charges, or 18-24 months for average use. Post this period, iPhones charge more often and may slow down, as indicated by iOS. Follow this guide to replace the battery and boost performance.

Important information before replacing the battery

1. Drain the iPhone to below 25% as a fully charged Li-ion battery can catch fire or explode if its protective layers are accidentally breached.

2. Opening your iPhone will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

3. Wear protective glasses to prevent eye injury during the repair.

4. Organize screws during the repair to prevent mixing them up, which could lead to damage to the iPhone by using the wrong screw in a thread.

5. After replacing the battery, a message "Important Message" will be displayed on the screen.

  • The message simply informs that the original battery has been replaced with a new one.

  • The message has no impact on the device's performance.

  • It appears on the lock screen for 4 days, then in the settings.

This is caused by the battery replacement not being authorized by Apple's official software, and the part was not paired with the motherboard.

Apple trying to achieve to ensure that users have their devices repaired at authorized service centers, which use original Apple parts, accessories, and software.

Tips for Getting Started

Highlight 3 mm on the pick or card.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm, as you could damage internal components.

If your iPhone's display is cracked, cover it with adhesive tape to prevent injuries during the repair.

If you are unable to attach the suction cup in the following steps, use a strong piece of tape (such as duct tape) and lift the screen.

Do not put your iPhone in the microwave!!

Step 1
Unscrewing the bottom pentalobe screws

Before starting, it is necessary to discharge the iPhone below 25% because a charged Li-ion battery can ignite or explode if accidentally cut.

Opening iPhone will break its waterproof seal, so have a replacement seal ready before beginning this step.  Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be waterproof.

Step 2
Display Disassembly

A) Heating the phone

1. It is recommended to wear protective ESD gloves.

2. Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the entire perimeter of the back for about 3 minutes to reach a temperature of approximately 80°C (176°F), or until it becomes difficult to keep your hand on the phone due to the high temperature.

Heating the phone helps to soften the adhesive between the rear glass and the phone frame, making it easier to open.

Along the right top edge of the iPhone are cables. Do not insert the pick or card into the marked area, as you could damage the cable.

B) Opening the display

The rear housing can be opened in two different ways: The first method is using a suction cup, and the second method is using a securing tool, which is safer.

In this guide, we will proceed using a suction cup.

Placement of the suction cup

Place the suction cups near the bottom edge of the iPhone, one on the middle and the other on the back, and gently press down on the spot.

If using a single suction cup, attach it to the bottom edge of the phone.

Securely hold your iPhone and with firm, steady pressure, pull on the suction cup to create a slight gap between the frame and the back cover.

After separating the back about 3 mm from the frame, insert a pick or card into the gap.

The adhesive holding the back in place is very strong. Therefore, creating this initial gap requires considerable force. If you encounter difficulty, reheat the bottom edge and gently slide the back up and down repeatedly to weaken the adhesive until you create a gap large enough to insert the card.

C) Heating the right edge

  • Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the left edge of the iPhone (the edge with the power button) for 90 seconds or until the back glass becomes too hot to touch.

D) Separating the adhesive (right side of the iPhone)

  • Slide the pick or card from the bottom left corner up to the top left corner, separating the adhesive.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm, as you could damage internal components.

Before proceeding, leave the pick or card in the top left corner.

  • Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the top edge of the iPhone for 90 seconds or until the back becomes too hot to touch.

  • Slide the pick or card around the top left corner of the iPhone to separate the top adhesive.

Before proceeding, leave the pick or card in the top left corner.

E) Heating the left edge

  • Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the right edge of the iPhone for 90 seconds or until the screen becomes too hot to touch.

F) Separating the adhesive (left side of the iPhone)

  • Insert the pick or card into the bottom righ corner of the iPhone.

  • Slide the pick or card along the entire edge until the clips holding the display release. Be careful of the flex cable located on this side of the display. (Cable is near volume buttons)

If you have difficulty separating the adhesive, reheat the right edge.

Step 3
Opening the iPhone

  • After successfully releasing the adhesive from the edges, remove the suction cup.
  • Open the iPhone by flipping the rear housing to the right side.

It is recommended to support the rear glass to avoid tearing the flat flex cable that connects the wireless charging.

When reassembling the iPhone to its original state, place the rear housing in position. Align the clips along the top edge and before snapping the rest of the cover into place, gently press the top edge into position. If it doesn't snap into place easily, check the condition of the clips around the perimeter of the rear glass and ensure they are not bent.

If you want to have phone screen secure the whole time you will be changing the battery we recommend this screen holder.

Step 4
Removing the battery connector cover

When reassembling the phone this is a good point to start your phone to make sure everything works before sealing the phone

Step 5
Disconnecting the battery

  • Use the tip of a spudger to disconnect the battery connector from the socket slightly away from the logic board. Contact may power up the phone during repair.

Also be careful and do not damage the black silicone seal around the connector. This silicone provides extra protection against dust and water.

Step 6
Removing the cover to the cable for wireless charging

  • Use Y000 screwdriver to unscrew the 0.9mm long screw. After that remove the bracket away using tweezers.

Step 7
Disconnecting the wireless charging cable

  • Disconnect this cable using the pointed end of spudger.

Step 8
Removing the back cover

  • Carefully remove the back cover away from phone and place it on a clean and stable surface

Step 9
Locate the adhesive pul-tabs

  • This model of iPhone has only two adhesive strips holding the battery. They are both located on the top side of battery under cameras.

Step 10
Pushing and removing the pull-tabs

  • Use pair of blunt-nosed tweezers or your fingernail to unstick the pull-tab away from the battery.

Be careful, do not puncture the battery!!

Roll the tabs between your tweezer, on the end of spudger or just catch them between your fingers and pull out the tabs slowly at a low angle one after the other.

During pulling hold the phone at the sides don’t push down on the battery.

When you stretch these strips they will lose their stickiness so during the stretching maintain tension on the whole strip not just the middle and it should slowly unstick from under the battery.

If the strip brakes do not panic. If you can see it try pulling it again if not continue as instructed in the step bellow.

Step 11
Removing the stuck battery

  • If the strips are out and the battery is still holding in place put couple of drops of isopropyl alcohol under the top edge of battery where the strips were.

Wait one minute and let the alcohol weaken the adhesive.

Use opening pick or flat end of spudger to carefully lift the battery. Don’t force it you can damage the battery. If its still stuck repeat this process again.

Step 12
Remove the battery

Remove the battery from the iPhone.

If there is some of the alcohol remaining in the phone wipe it before installing new battery.

Step 13
Removing old adhesive around the edges of the frame

  • Remove all of the old adhesive around the inside edges of the iPhone using the spudger.

Step 14
Applying the adhesive strips on new battery

A) Peel of the large blue plastic cover of the adhesive

B) Stick the adhesive to the top back side of the battery so only the top of strip will stick out

C) Flip the battery and peel away the blue foil that is covering up the end of the strip

D) Fold the ends so they will stick to the edge and flat side of the battery

E) Put the battery inside the the phone on its place

F) Line it up so you can press the connector in its place later when reassembling the iPhone

G) Lift the battery from the outside edge so you can peel away the final big foil

H) Carefuly push the battery into its place so the adhesive sticks

Step 15
Applying new adhesive around the edges of the rear cover frame

  • Apply new adhesive around the edges of the iPhone.

The new adhesive will ensure the iPhone's resistance to water and dust.

Opening your iPhone will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

Step 16
Reassembling the iPhone

When reassembling the iPhone back to its original state, follow these instructions in reverse order.

Start at the step 8.

After reassembly, perform a forced restart. This may help prevent some issues.
