If your MacBook battery is not holding a charge, draining too quickly, or not charging at all, you can use this guide to replace the faulty battery and restore your device's functionality. Replacing a worn-out or damaged battery with a new battery you can significantly improve your MacBook's performance and battery life, allowing you to use your device more efficiently. Whether you're dealing with poor battery health or other charging issues, this step-by-step guide will help you replace the battery and bring your MacBook back to optimal working condition.

Important information before replacing the battery

1. Back up your data – Before starting any repair, it’s essential to back up your data to avoid any potential loss. You can back up your files to a cloud storage service or you can back up your data to an external hard drive.

2. Turn Off the MacBook and Disconnect it from Power – Unplug your MacBook from the power source and turn it off to avoid the risk of short circuits or other damage. After opening the MacBook be sure to disconnect the battery too so it doesn’t get powered on accidentally.

3. Be Careful with Cables and Connectors – The display is connected to other components via cables. Be cautious when disconnecting to avoid damaging connectors or cables, which could cause functionality issues. For best results use spudger when disconnecting the cables.

4. Use an Antistatic Mat – Electronic components can be sensitive to static electricity. Use an antistatic mat and wrist strap to minimize the risk of damage.

5. Wear Protective Gear – During the display replacement, wear protective gear to avoid injuries when handling sharp or small parts.

6. Organize Screws and Small Components Carefully keep screws and parts in separate places during disassembly to prevent mixing them up or losing them. Using a screw organizer can be very helpful.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1
Unscrew the screws holding the bottom cover

Before beginning this repair, disable the Auto Boot option on your MacBook.

Auto Boot activates your Mac when you open the screen and could be unintentionally activated during disassembly.

For MacBooks that have Big Sur v11.1 or later, turning off Auto Boot may not be effective. You can continue with the steps, but remember to disconnect the battery as soon as you can access it.

1. Fully power down and unplug your MacBook charger before you start. Close the screen and flip the laptop over so it’s upside-down.

2. With a T5 screwdriver, remove these screws:

- Two 7.9 mm screws

- Two 7.1 mm screws

- Six 2.6 mm screws

During the repair

Carefully track each screw to ensure it’s returned to its original position, preventing potential damage to your MacBook.

Step 2
Taking off the lower case

1. Insert your opening tool between the display and the lower case, then separate them.

2. After creating enough space use your fingers and pull the case upward to detach it.

3. Take off the whole lower case.

To reattach the lower case

Align it properly and press down firmly to secure the two hidden clips underneath. You should feel and hear them click into place.

Step 3
Unpluging the battery

Use tweezers to unstick the tape covering the battery connector just enough to reveal the connector underneath it.

With spudger gently push the battery connector parallel to the logic board and disconnect it from socket.

Step 4
Detaching the left speaker cable

When the MacBook is upside down, the left speaker will be on your right-hand side.

Gently insert the pointed end of a spudger beneath the left speaker cable and lift it upwards to detach it from the logic board.

Once the connector is free, use the flat end of the spudger to gently lift the cable, breaking the adhesive that holds it to the logic board.

Step 5
Unscrewing the screw holding the left speaker

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the 4.2 mm screw that attaches the left speaker to the chassis.

Step 6
Removing the stretch-release adhesive under the left speaker

Using tweezers, lift the black tab of the stretch-release adhesive on the speaker until you can hold it with your fingers.

Pull the adhesive tab slowly and carefully to release the strip from under the speaker.

Ensure the adhesive strip stays parallel to the MacBook, and avoid dragging it across the interior of the case.

Continue pulling the adhesive strip until it’s fully removed from beneath the speaker.

If the strip tears, apply heat with a heat gun or a hair dryer to soften the adhesive.

Carefully slide spudger or opening pick under the speaker and separate the adhesive.

Step 7
Removing the stretch-release adhesive under the right speaker

Use a pair of tweezers to peel back the black pull tab on the speaker's stretch-release adhesive until you can grip it with your fingers.

Grab the adhesive strip’s pull tab and slowly pull the adhesive strip out from underneath the speaker.

Keep the adhesive strip as parallel to the laptop as possible, avoiding dragging it across the inside of the case.

Pull the adhesive strip until it is completely freed from under the speaker.

If the adhesive strip breaks, apply heat with a heat gun, or hair dryer to soften the adhesive.

Carefully slide a spudger or opening pick underneath the speaker to help separate the adhesive.

Step 8
Taking out the left speaker

Remove the left speaker from MacBook.

When Reasembling

Make sure to apply a new adhesive strip from double sided tape to the bottom of the speaker before securing it back into the case, ensuring it functions properly.

Step 9
Detaching the right speaker cable

The left speaker will be on your right-hand side when working on the MacBook, as it's laying upside down.

Slide the pointed end of a spudger underneath the left speaker cable and gently pry straight up to disconnect it from the logic board.

Step 10
Unscrewing the screw holding the right speaker

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the 4.2 mm screw that holds the right speaker in place within the case.

Step 11
Removing the stretch-release adhesive under the right speaker

Step 12
Taking out the right speaker

Remove the right speaker from MacBook.

When Reasembling

Make sure to apply a new adhesive strip from double sided tape to the bottom of the speaker before securing it back into the case, ensuring it functions properly.

Step 13
Removing the trackpad cable cover

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the two 1.4 mm screws holding the trackpad cable cover in place.

Use tweezers to remove the cover.

Step 14
Unpluging the trackpad cable

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently lift the trackpad cable connector out of its port.

Slowly peel the trackpad cable away from the battery.

The cable is lightly attached to the battery with adhesive.

Step 15
Unscrewing the battery tray screws

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two 2.5 mm screws that are fastening the battery tray to the case.

Step 16
Taking out the battery tray adhesive strips

The battery cells in MacBook are secured to a metal tray as one unit, and this tray is held in place by six stretch-release adhesive strips.

Do not try to detach the battery cells from the metal tray.

On the left side of the MacBook, use tweezers to lift the three black pull tabs on the adhesive strips until you can grab them with your fingers.

Take hold of the pull tab on the adhesive strip and gently pull it out from under the battery.

Keep the strip as level with the laptop as possible to avoid scraping it against the inside of the case.

Continue pulling the strip until it is completely detached from beneath the battery.

Do the same for the other two adhesive strips on the left side of the battery.

Perform the same steps to remove the three adhesive strips from the right side of the battery.

If any of the adhesive strips tore while removing them, you can use a plastic card to carefully finish separating the battery tray from the case.

Step 17
Taking out the battery

Carefully remove the battery from the MacBook.

To install your new battery follow these instructions in reverse order.

When reassembling

If your new battery doesn’t have adhesive pre-applied, you can use double sided tape to secure the battery tray in place.

After the new battery is installed follow the calibration procedure:

- Charge the battery to 100%, and then continue charging for at least 2 more hours.

- Unplug the charger and use the MacBook normally to drain the battery.

- When you see the low battery warning, save your work and keep the laptop on until it goes to sleep due to low battery.

- Wait at least 5 hours, then charge the laptop uninterrupted to 100%.
