Important information before replacing the screen
1. Back up your data – Before starting any repair, it’s essential to back up your data to avoid any potential loss. You can back up your files to a cloud storage service or you can back up your data to an external hard drive.
2. Turn Off the MacBook and Disconnect it from Power – Before starting, unplug your MacBook from the power source and turn it off to avoid the risk of short circuits or other damage. After opening the MacBook be sure to disconnect the battery too so it doesn’t get powered on accidentally.
3. Be Careful with Cables and Connectors – The display is connected to other components via cables. Be cautious when disconnecting to avoid damaging connectors or cables, which could cause functionality issues. For best results use spudger when disconnecting the cables.
4. Use an Antistatic Mat – Electronic components can be sensitive to static electricity. Use an antistatic mat and wrist strap to minimize the risk of damage.
5. Wear Protective Gear – During the display replacement, wear protective gear to avoid injuries when handling sharp or small parts.
6. Organize Screws and Small Components – Carefully keep screws and parts in separate places during disassembly to prevent mixing them up or losing them. Using a screw organizer can be very helpful.

Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 Getting your MacBook Air ready for disassembly
Before starting, make sure the battery is discharged to below 25% to minimize the risk of fire or injury, as puncturing a charged lithium-ion battery can be hazardous.
- Turn off your MacBook Air completely and disconnect any attached cables.
- Shut the display, then turn the laptop over so the bottom faces upward. Leave the lid closed until you have safely disconnected the battery.
Step 2 Removing the bottom case
During this repair, organize the screws carefully and ensure each one is returned to its original location.
- Use a PL4 pentalobe screwdriver to take out the four 6.4 mm screws that hold the lower case in place.
Step 3 Placing an opening pick
- Attach a suction cup to the center of the front edge of the lower case.
- Pull firmly and steadily on the suction cup to create a small gap between the lower case and the frame.
- Once a gap forms, insert an opening pick into it.
Step 4 Disengaging the snapping clips
In this step, you will feel and hear six clips disengage. If one clip doesn't release, push the opening pick in further and try again.
- Move the pick toward the bottom-right corner to release the first clip.
- Continue sliding the pick around the corner and up along the right edge to release the next two clips.
- Place the opening pick into the gap you created earlier with the suction cup.
- Slide the pick toward the bottom-left corner, then slide it up along the left edge to release the remaining three clips.
Step 5 Disengaging the sliding tabs
The back edge of the MacBook is secured by four sliding tabs that hold the lower case tightly.
Removing these tabs requires significant force, so wearing gloves is recommended to avoid injury from the sharp edges of the case.
- Keep the lower case flat and carefully pull it straight away from the back edge, working one corner at a time to release the sliding tabs.
Warning: Avoid lifting upward until the cover is fully detached!
Step 6 Taking off the lower case
- Take off the lower case.
When reassembling
- Position the lower case and align the sliding tabs with the screw heads they fit over. Press down while sliding the lower case toward the back edge to secure the tabs. The sliding will stop once the tabs are properly engaged.
- If one side aligns but the other shifts out of place, adjust both sides to ensure there’s no gap along the back edge.
- Once the lower case sits flush with the frame, press firmly around the edges to lock the four snapping clips into place.
Each clip will make a noticeable click as it secures.
Step 7 Taking off the tape covering the battery connector
- Use blunt-nosed tweezers to carefully peel away the tape.
When reassembling
- Reuse the existing adhesive to reattach the tape to the connector cover.
Step 8 Taking off the battery connector cover
- Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the two 1.5 mm screws holding it in place.
Note: Some screws may differ slightly, so if the T3 doesn’t fit, try using a T4 Torx screwdriver for better compatibility during this procedure.
- Once the screws are removed, lift off the cover.
Step 9 Detaching the battery
- Use a pick to carefully lift and disconnect the battery press connector.
When reconnecting
- Position the press connector over the socket and press down gently on one side until it snaps into place. Then press down on the opposite side to fully secure it. You may need to adjust it a few times to achieve proper alignment.
Step 10 Loosening the speaker cable and hinge covers
When working on the MacBook upside down, note that the right speaker will appear on your left side.
- Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove these screws:
- Two 2.6 mm screws holding the left hinge cover
- Two 1.5 mm screws securing the speaker cable cover
Step 11 Taking off the covers
- Start by removing the speaker cable cover.
Next, use the pointed end of a spudger, inserting it into one of the screw holes on the left hinge cover.
- Push the hinge cover away from the back edge to loosen it.
- Lift and remove the hinge cover.
Step 12 Detaching the right speaker
- Using the pointed end of a spudger, gently lift and disconnect the press connector for the right speaker.
Step 13 Loosening the right speaker
- Use a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the upper edge of the right speaker in place:
- One 2.7 mm screw
- One 5.5 mm screw
- Then, switch to a T6 Torx screwdriver to take out the 3.5 mm screw securing the lower edge of the speaker.
Step 14 Taking out the right speaker
Be cautious to avoid snagging the cable at the top-right edge of the speaker on the logic board, as it could tear.
