How to Choose the Right Motorola Battery?

When choosing a replacement battery, compatibility with your specific device is the most important factor. Motorola uses separate model numbers for phones and batteries, and one battery type may be compatible with several devices.

Before ordering, we recommend checking three key details:

  1. Device model – smartphones may also have a model number in the XTxxxx format.
  2. Battery part number – for example, JK50, NE50, MB40 or MT45. Two-way radio batteries may use part numbers such as PMNN4409 or HNN9008A.
  3. Technical specifications and compatibility – particularly capacity, voltage, battery chemistry and the list of compatible devices.

Phone Model Numbers and Battery Part Numbers Are Not the Same

The XTxxxx designation identifies a specific Motorola phone model or variant. The battery part number identifies the replacement battery itself.

For example, the Motorola Edge 20 XT2143 uses the MB40 battery, while the Edge 20 Pro XT2153 uses the MT45 battery. Despite their similar phone names, these devices require different batteries.

Conversely, the same battery part number may be compatible with multiple models. The NE50 battery is used in the Motorola Moto G52, G72 and G82.

Original service parts may also carry an additional identification number, such as SB18D10750, which helps identify the exact service replacement part.

Battery capacity in mAh alone is not a reliable indicator of compatibility. Two batteries with the same capacity may have different dimensions, connectors or electrical characteristics.

Genuine and Aftermarket Motorola Batteries

Replacement batteries for Motorola mobile phones are available in three quality categories.

GENUINE PART
Genuine
An original service replacement part designed for the relevant Motorola devices.
ALTERNATIVE PART
Aftermarket
An alternative replacement part made by a manufacturer other than the device manufacturer. It is designed as a compatible replacement for the specified phone models.
HIGHER QUALITY TIER
Aftermarket PRO
A higher quality tier within aftermarket replacement parts. Motorola batteries in this category also carry the HQ designation.

In our range, batteries for Motorola two-way radios, mobile terminals and other specialised devices are available exclusively in the Aftermarket PRO (HQ) quality category.

When choosing a battery, consider its quality category and stated capacity separately. A higher quality tier does not automatically mean greater battery capacity or longer device runtime. Compatibility with the specific device model remains essential.

Batteries for Motorola Two-Way Radios and Other Devices

In addition to mobile phones, our range includes replacement batteries for selected professional and consumer devices. These include two-way radios from the CP, DP, GP, XPR and Talkabout series, MBP baby monitors, as well as mobile terminals and barcode scanners.

Battery chemistry is an important consideration. Li-Ion (lithium-ion) and Ni-MH (nickel-metal hydride) batteries use different chemical compositions and may have different charging requirements. Li-Ion batteries are used in selected professional two-way radios and mobile terminals, while Ni-MH batteries can also be found in certain Talkabout radios and baby monitors.

Voltage, measured in volts (V), is another important specification. Our range includes batteries rated at 3.6 V, 7.2 V or 7.4 V, depending on the device and battery chemistry.

Two-way radio batteries may have part numbers such as PMNN4409, PMNN4415 or HNN9008A. The same part number may appear on batteries with different stated capacities, so it is important to compare other specifications and confirm compatibility as well.

Important when choosing a battery: Do not assume that batteries with different voltages or chemical compositions are interchangeable unless compatibility has been explicitly confirmed.

When Should You Replace a Battery?

Battery wear may become noticeable through gradually reduced runtime or unstable device operation.

Battery diagnostics
Common Signs of Battery Wear or Damage
Reduced battery life
Significantly shorter battery life
May indicate a reduction in the battery's usable capacity.
Unexpected device shutdowns
Unexpected shutdowns
May indicate difficulty supplying sufficient power under load.
Inaccurate battery level indicator
Unstable battery level readings
May indicate battery deterioration or inaccurate capacity estimation.
Intermittent battery charging
Intermittent charging
May indicate a problem with the battery, charging connector or charging accessories.
Swollen or deformed battery
Swelling or deformation
May indicate physical battery damage that requires safe handling.

These symptoms do not always mean that the battery itself is faulty. If the device is not charging, it is also worth checking the charging cable, power adapter and charging connector.

⚠︎
Safety warning: Do not continue using or charging a swollen or mechanically damaged battery. Do not squeeze or puncture the battery, and have it replaced by a professional repair technician.

What Should You Know Before Replacing a Battery?

The replacement procedure depends on the design of the specific device. Smartphones with built-in batteries may require removal of the back cover and separation of adhesive bonds.

Replacing a removable battery in a professional two-way radio may be simpler, but using the correct battery type is still essential.

Before installation, check the battery part number, connector, technical specifications and compatibility. For devices that require disassembly, we recommend following the appropriate service procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out which battery my Motorola phone needs?
Check the exact phone model, including its XTxxxx model number where applicable, and compare it with the compatibility information provided for the replacement battery. The original battery part number can also help.

Can I use a battery from another Motorola model?
Only if the specific battery is listed as compatible with both models. Similar phone names or identical battery capacities do not confirm compatibility.

Is an Aftermarket PRO battery always better than an Aftermarket battery?
Not necessarily. Aftermarket PRO indicates a higher quality tier within alternative replacement parts, but it does not automatically guarantee greater capacity or longer battery life. Always compare the specifications of the individual batteries.

Why do Motorola two-way radio batteries have the same part number but different capacities?
The same battery part number may be used for products with different stated capacities. For example, our range includes PMNN4409 batteries rated at 2200 mAh and 3350 mAh. Therefore, checking the part number alone is not enough – you should also verify the technical specifications and compatibility of the specific battery.

Can I use a battery with a higher mAh capacity?
Only if it is designed for your specific device. Higher capacity alone does not guarantee compatibility. Dimensions, connectors, voltage and other technical characteristics also matter.

Can I replace a Ni-MH battery with a Li-Ion battery?
Not unless compatibility has been explicitly confirmed. These battery technologies differ and may require different charging methods and electrical specifications. Always use a battery designed for your specific two-way radio or other device.

Do I need to fully discharge a new Motorola battery before using it for the first time?
Lithium-ion batteries do not need to be fully discharged before their first charge. For other battery types, follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the specific device or battery.
