iPhone batteries retain 80% capacity for about 500 charges, or 18-24 months for average use. Post this period, iPhones charge more often and may slow down, as indicated by iOS. Follow this guide to replace the battery and boost performance.

Important information before replacing the battery

1. Drain the iPhone to below 25% as a fully charged Li-ion battery can catch fire or explode if its protective layers are accidentally breached.

2. Opening your iPhone will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

3. Wear protective glasses to prevent eye injury during the repair.

4. Organize screws during the repair to prevent mixing them up, which could lead to damage to the iPhone by using the wrong screw in a thread.

5. After replacing the battery, a message "Important Message" will be displayed on the screen.

  • The message simply informs that the original battery has been replaced with a new one.

  • The message has no impact on the device's performance.

  • It appears on the lock screen for 4 days, then in the settings.

This is caused by the battery replacement not being authorized by Apple's official software, and the part was not paired with the motherboard.

Apple trying to achieve to ensure that users have their devices repaired at authorized service centers, which use original Apple parts, accessories, and software.

Tips for Getting Started

Highlight 3 mm on the pick or card.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm, as you could damage internal components.

If your iPhone's display is cracked, cover it with adhesive tape to prevent injuries during the repair.

If you are unable to attach the suction cup in the following steps, use a strong piece of tape (such as duct tape) and lift the screen.

Do not put your iPhone in the microwave!!

Step 1
Unscrewing the bottom pentalobe screws

Unplug any cables from your iPhone and turn it off.
On the bottom edge of the iPhone, unscrew two 7.7 mm long pentalobe screws using a Pentalobe PL1 (0.8 mm) screwdriver.

Step 2
Rear glass disassembly

a) Heating up the iPhone

It is recommended to wear protective ESD gloves.
Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the entire perimeter of the rear glass for about 3 minutes to reach a temperature of approximately 80°C (176°F), or until it becomes difficult to keep your hand on the phone due to the high temperature.

Heating the phone up helps to soften the adhesive between the rear glass and the phone frame, making it easier to open.

A fragile cable connects the rear glass to the phone near the volume down button
Avoid inserting your pick here to prevent cutting the cable.
Additionally, there are several spring contacts along the edges of the phone.

Be very careful not to insert your pick deeper than recommended in these areas to avoid bending the contacts.

b) Choosing the method of opening the rear glass

The rear glass can be opened in two different ways: The first method is using a suction cup, and the second method is using a securing tool, which is safer.

Placement of the suction cup

Attach the suction cup to the bottom edge of the phone, avoiding the edge of the glass itself.
Securely hold your iPhone and with firm, steady pressure, pull on the suction cup to create a slight gap between the frame and the rear glass.

After separating the rear glass about 3 mm from the frame, insert a pick or card into the gap.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 5 mm along the bottom edge, as you could damage internal components.

The adhesive holding the rear glass in place is very strong. Therefore, creating this initial gap requires considerable force. If you encounter difficulty, reheat the bottom edge and gently slide the rear glass up and down repeatedly to weaken the adhesive until you create a gap large enough to insert the card.

c) Heating up the right edge

Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the right edge of the iPhone (the edge with the volume buttons) for 90 seconds or until the rear glass becomes too hot to touch.

d) Separating the adhesive (right side of the iPhone)

Move your pick around the bottom right corner of the back glass, halfway up to the right edge until you feel a hard stop at a clip holding the rear glass in place.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 7 mm along the right edge, as you could damage internal components.

Be careful not to cut past the volume buttons to avoid damaging the wireless charging cable.

Keep this pick in place to stop the adhesive from resealing.

e) Heating up the left edge

Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the left edge of the iPhone for 90 seconds or until the rear glass becomes too hot to touch.

f) Separating the adhesive (left side of the iPhone)

Slide a second pick in the bottom edge.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 5 mm along the left edge, as you could damage internal components.

Move your pick around the bottom left corner and along the side of the phone all the way to the top left corner.

Keep this pick in place to stop the adhesive from resealing.

g) Heating up the top edge
Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the top edge of the iPhone for 90 seconds or until the rear glass becomes too hot to touch.

h) Separating the adhesive (top edge of the iPhone)
Move the second pick around the top left corner of the phone, all the way to the upper top right corner.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm along the top edge, as you could damage internal components.

As you move the pick along the top edge, you might hear and feel clicks - those are the top two clips releasing.

Keep this pick in place to stop the adhesive from resealing.

i) Heating up the top right corner
Using a hair dryer or heat gun, heat the top right corner of the iPhone for 90 seconds or until the rear glass becomes too hot to touch.

j) Separating the adhesive (top right corner of the iPhone)
More the second pick around the top right corner of the phone, all the way to the volume up button

Do not insert the pick or card more than 4 mm along the right edge, as you could damage internal components.

Step 3
Opening the iPhone

After successfully releasing the adhesive from the edges, remove the picks.

Open the iPhone by flipping the rear glass to the right - opposite of how you would open a book.

It is recommended to support the rear glass to avoid tearing the cables and connectors that are attached to the rear glass.

Do not attempt to fully detach the rear glass yet, as several fragile flat flex cables still connect it to the iPhone's motherboard.

When reassembling the iPhone to its original state, place the rear glass in position.
Align the clips along the top edge and before snapping the rest of the rear glass into place, gently press the top edge into position.
If it doesn't snap into place easily, check the condition of the clips around the perimeter of the rear glass and ensure they are not bent.

Step 4
Removing the lower connector cover

Warning: If the battery is damaged, stop the repair. Do not put yourself in danger.

Using a Tri-point Y000 screwdriver, unscrew the two 1.3 mm-long screws holding the lower connector cover in place.

Use tweezers to slide the cover upward to the top of the phone.
Detach the cover from its slot in the logic board and remove it.

During reassembly, put back the cover by sliding it the exact opposite way to re-connect the hook and place it flat against the connector.

Step 5
Disconnecting the battery

Hold the rear glass upright with one hand and rotate it slightly to expose the battery press connector located just below the volume buttons.

Using the tip of a pick, pry up and disconnect the battery press connector from the logic board.

To re-connect the press connector, position it directly over its socket and gently press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side.

Step 6
Removing the middle connector cover

Using a tri-point Y000 screwdriver, unscrew the 0.9 mm screw that holds the middle connector cover.

Use the flat end of a spudger or your finger to push the cover toward the bottom of the phone and detach its top edge.

Remove the cover.

When reassembling, align the cover with the tab just behind the clip on the logic board. Press down with one finger and slide the cover forward to lock the clip in place.

Step 7
Disconnecting the wireless charging coil

Using the tip of a pick, pry up and disconnect the wireless charging coil and NFC connector.

Step 8
Removing the rear glass

Remove the rear glass and place it on a clean, straight surface.

Step 9
Detaching the battery cable

There is an adhesive holding the battery cable to the logic board.

Slide the tip of a pick under the cable and detach it from the logic board.

Be careful not to crease the cable, damaging it.

Warning: Avoid using sharp tools near the battery and be extra careful not to puncture it.

Step 10
Peeling up a corner of the battery pull strips

There are two stretch release adhesive strips securing the battery to the iPhone. To free the battery, you must first remove them

Using the tip of a pick, scrape up the edges of each stretch release pull adhesive strip from its bottom in an upward motion until you can safely grip the edge with a pair of tweezers.

It is advised to use tweezers with a blunt tip to avoid damaging the battery.

Step 11
Peeling up the pull strips

Grip the strip and peel it from the battery.

Do not pull it from under the battery yet.

Repeat for the other pull strip.

Step 12
Releasing the top edge of the battery

Before you remove the strips, you must separate the stretch release adhesive that wraps around the top edge of the battery.

Using tweezers, hold one of the tabs away from the battery and slice the adhesive holding the strip to the top edge of the battery using a pick.

Repeat for the other pull strip.

Step 13
Removing the stretch release adhesive

With a good grip, grab the top of the pull strip and slowly pull it upward at the lowest possible angle to the phone.

Avoid dragging the pull strip over any components or cables above the battery.
Remove the strip slowly and patiently to avoid it breaking off before you remove it whole.
Give it enough time to stretch out, change your grip if necessary.
You might want to try wrapping the strip around a tool to improve your leverage.

Repeat for the other pull strip.

Step 14
Removing the battery

Pry up the battery by using the short edge of a plastic card.

The adhesive holding the battery in place might be too strong to pry the battery up right away. Allow it to soften by applying constant pressure until it’s loose.
Move the card from side to side to release any remaining adhesive once you slide the card deeper under the battery.

Lift the battery up until you can grab and remove it.

Step 15
Removing the old stretch release battery adhesive residue

Note how your old battery adhesive sat in the battery compartment. You may take a photo to ensure proper placement of the new adhesive.

Remove all the old battery adhesive residue in the battery compartment.

You may pull it off with your fingers or tweezers, roll it into the tip of a spudger or scrape it off with the spudger’s flat end.

Step 16
Prepping the surface for the new stretch release battery adhesive

Clean the surface that had the old battery adhesive with a lint-free cloth (or a coffee filter) soaked with a bit of isopropyl alcohol.

Inspect the battery compartment on your device. Avoid placing the battery adhesive over delicate surfaces like ribbon cables, NFC components or wireless charging coils. Don’t place the battery adhesive too close to sensitive components.

It is advised to check for the fitment of the new battery at this point of your repair. Temporarily reconnect the new battery and place it into its compartment. Check its fitment and that the cable properly reaches its socket on the logic board.
Once you make sure everything fits, disconnect the battery and continue reassembly.

Step 17
Applying the new stretch release battery adhesive

Remove the small sections of blue film covering the flat ends of the new stretch release adhesive strips
Don't remove the entire blue liner yet.

Carefully align the sections with the blue film removed with the top edge of the battery on its front side and gently press them into the place.

Note that these will act as the strips you pulled from the top of the old battery while removing it.

Place the battery on a flat surface and begin removing the rest of the blue film, beginning on the other side of the stretch release adhesive.

Use a pair of tweezers if you’re having trouble with separating the edge of the blue film from the adhesive.

Gently roll the adhesive onto the surface of the battery over the top edge using your fingertip and lay it flat to the back side of the battery.

Do not pull or stretch the adhesive.

Press the strips firmly, sticking them properly to the back side of the battery.

Step 18
Applying the new battery into its compartment

Gently remove the remaining piece of film to fully expose the side of the battery adhesive that sticks to the battery compartment.

Place the battery into its compartment and lightly press it into the device.

Connect the battery cable to its socket on the logic board.

It is advised to test your repair at this point with the new battery in place, while the phone’s rear glass isn’t sealed yet.

Temporarily reconnect all the rear glass components, turn on your phone and make sure it functions without any issues.
Turn it off again, disconnect the rear glass components and continue reassembly.

Step 19
Removing the old adhesive around the edges of the iPhone

Remove all the old adhesive around the perimeter of your iPhone's case using a spudger or tweezers.

Be sure to remove any remaining smaller bits of adhesive with the tip of your spudger.

Step 20
Prepping the surface of the iPhone for the new adhesive

Clean the areas of the frame and rear glass that had the old adhesive with a lint-free cloth (or a coffee filter) soaked with a bit of isopropyl alcohol.

By doing this you remove all the remaining adhesive residue, while prepping the surface for the new adhesive.
Swipe your cleaning cloth in same direction the whole time for the best results.

Step 21
Applying new adhesive around the edges of the frame

Reconnect all the phone’s components to the rear glass through a reverse process and apply the new adhesive around the edges of the iPhone.

The new adhesive will ensure the iPhone's resistance to water and dust.

Before placing the rear glass on the iPhone, make sure to remove the protective foil.

Be precise while applying the new adhesive. Improper installation could lead to your iPhone not being water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

Step 22
Reassembling the iPhone

Install your rear glass back by snapping all the clips back into their place.

Check the phone for excess screws and small parts that may be stuck in the body of phone and remove them.

When reassembling the iPhone back to its original state, follow these instructions in reverse order

After reassembly, perform a forced restart. This may help prevent any possible issues.
