  • iPhone batteries retain 80% capacity for about 500 charges, or 18-24 months for average use. Post this period, iPhones charge more often and may slow down, as indicated by iOS. Follow this guide to replace the battery and boost performance.

  • Important information before replacing the battery

  • 1. Drain the iPhone to below 25% as a fully charged Li-ion battery can catch fire or explode if its protective layers are accidentally breached.

  • 2. If Face ID is damaged or replaced, it will stop working, so be careful not to damage any of these components during this procedure. In case of damage, only Apple or an Apple authorized technician can restore the Apple ID function.

  • 3. Opening your iPhone will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

  • 5. Organize screws during the repair to prevent mixing them up, which could lead to damage to the iPhone by using the wrong screw in a thread.

  • 6. The loudspeaker is removed in this guide to prevent breaking the battery adhesive strip. It is possible, however, to remove the battery without taking out the loudspeaker.

  • 7. After replacing the display, a message "Important Message" will be displayed on the screen.

  • The message simply informs that the original battery has been replaced with a new one.
  • The message has no impact on the device's performance.
  • It appears on the lock screen for 4 days, then in the settings.

  • This is caused by the display replacement not being authorized by Apple's official software, and the part was not paired with the motherboard.

  • Apple trying to achieve to ensure that users have their devices repaired at authorized service centers, which use original Apple parts, accessories, and software.

  • Tips for Getting Started

  • Highlight 3 mm on the pick or card.

  • Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm, as you could damage internal components.

  • If your iPhone's display is cracked, cover it with adhesive tape to prevent injuries during the repair.

  • If you are unable to attach the suction cup in the following steps, use a strong piece of tape (such as duct tape) and lift the screen.

  • Do not put your iPhone in the microwave!!

  • Required Tools

Step 1
Unscrewing the bottom pentalobe screws

Before starting, it is necessary to discharge the iPhone below 25% because a charged Li-ion battery can ignite or explode if accidentally cut.

Opening iPhone will break its waterproof seal, so have a new seal ready before beginning this step.  Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be waterproof.

Step 2
Display Disassembly

  • A) Heating the phone
  •
  • 1. It is recommended to wear protective ESD gloves.
  •
  • 2. Using a heat gun or a hair dryer, heat the entire perimeter of the display for about 3 minutes to reach a temperature of approximately 80°C (176°F), or until it becomes difficult to keep your hand on the phone due to the high temperature.
  •
  • Heating the phone up helps to soften the adhesive between the display and the phone frame, making it easier to open.
  • There are two fragile cables that link the screen to the phone: one is just above the mute button, and the other is roughly halfway between the volume down button and the phone's bottom.
  •
  • Additionally, there are several spring contacts along the edges of the phone.
  •
  • Be very careful not to insert your pick deeper than recommended in these areas to avoid bending the contacts.

  • B) Opening the display
  •
  • The display can be opened in two different ways: The first method is using a suction cup, and the second method is using a securing tool, which is safer.
  •
  • In this guide, we will proceed using a suction cup.

  • Placement of the suction cup
  •
  • Attach the suction cup to the bottom edge of the phone, avoiding the edge of the glass itself.
  • Securely hold your iPhone and with firm, steady pressure, pull on the suction cup to create a slight gap between the frame and the display.
  • After separating the screen about 3 mm from the frame, insert a pick or card into the gap.

  • Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm along the bottom edge, as you could damage internal components.
  • The adhesive holding the screen in place is very strong. Therefore, creating this initial gap requires considerable force. If you encounter difficulty, reheat the bottom edge and gently slide the screen up and down repeatedly to weaken the adhesive until you create a gap large enough to insert the card.

  • C) Heating the right edge
  •
  • Using a heat gun or a hair dryer, apply heat the right edge of the iPhone (the edge with the power button) for 90 seconds or until the screen becomes too hot to touch.

  • D) Releasing the right clip and separating the adhesive (right side of the iPhone)
  •
  • Move your opening tool around the bottom right corner of the screen toward the power button until you feel a hard stop at a clip holding the screen in place.

  • Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm along the right edge, as you could damage internal components.

  • Rotate your pick so the flat edge is under the display.
  • Hold the pick with one hand and twist it to increase the gap between the display and the frame and release the right clip.
  • Insert a second opening pick to the right of the first one.
  • Move the first pick back to the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Slide the second pick to the top right corner to separate the adhesive.
  • Keep these picks in place to stop the adhesive from resealing.

  • E) Heating up the top edge
  •
  • Using a heat gun or a hair dryer, heat the top edge of the iPhone for 90 seconds or until the screen becomes too hot to touch.

  • F) Separating the adhesive and releasing the top left clip
  •
  • Slide a third pick in the top right corner, just above the previous pick.

  • Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm along the top edge, as you could damage internal components.

  • Move your pick around the top right corner and along the top edge until it stops at the top left screen clip.
  • Rotate the pick so its flat edge is under the screen.
  • Twist the pick to release the top left screen clip, then slide the pick to the top left corner.

  • G) Heating up the left edge
  •
  • Using a heat gun or a hair dryer, apply heat to the left edge of the iPhone (the edge with volume buttons) for 90 seconds or until the screen becomes too hot to touch.

  • H) Releasing the clips and separating the adhesive (left side of the iPhone)
  •
  • Move your pick around the top left corner of the screen and along the left edge to release the clips and separate the adhesive holding it in place.

  • Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm along the top edge, as you could damage internal components.
  • Avoid the two cables connecting the display to the phone.

Step 3
Opening the iPhone

  • After successfully releasing the adhesive from the edges, remove the picks.

  • Open the iPhone by flipping the screen to the left side, like a book.

  • It is recommended to support the display to avoid tearing the flat flex cable that connects the display to the motherboard.

  • Do not attempt to fully detach the screen yet, as several fragile flat flex cables still connect it to the iPhone's motherboard.

  • Warning: If the battery is damaged stop the repair. Do not put yourself in danger.

  • When reassembling the iPhone to its original state, place the display in position. Align the clips along the top edge and before snapping the rest of the display into place, gently press the top edge into position. If it doesn't snap into place easily, check the condition of the clips around the perimeter of the screen and ensure they are not bent.

Step 4
Unfasten the logic board cover

  • Remove 6 screws usingY000 screwdriver that secure the logic board cover.

  • There are:

  • - Four 1.6 mm-long screws

  • - Two 1.3 mm-long screws

Step 5
Remove the logic board cover

  • Rotate the bottom of the logic board cover counterclockwise and then slice the top left corner out from under the ambient light sensor cable in order to remove it.

When reassembling, make sure that top left corner of the cover goes under the ambient light sensor cable.

Step 6
Disconnecting the battery

  • Use the tip of a opening pick to pry the battery press connector off the bottom right corner of the logic board.

  • Gently bend the battery connector with the flex cable away from the motherboard to prevent accidental contact with the motherboard connector and thus avoid potential short circuits.

  • Try not to damage the black silicone seal, which provides additional protection against water and dust ingress.

  • To reconnect a press connector, align it over its socket and then gently press down on one side until it clicks into place. Then repeat the process on the other side. Make sure it sits flat, as the insulating rubber around the sockets might prevent it from connecting fully.

Step 7
Disconnecting the display

  • Disconnect the screen cable connector from the center of the logic board using an opening pick.

  • For reconnection, press down on the flex cable connector as shown in the picture.

  •

  • Follow these steps:

  • Carefully align and press down on one side of the flex cable connector until it snaps into place.

  • Then repeat this process on the other side of the flex cable connector.

  • Avoid pressing on the middle part of the flex cable connector. If the flex cable connector is improperly aligned, the pins on the flex cable connector or on the motherboard connector may bend and cause permanent damage."

Step 8
Dismounting the the ambient light sensor

  • Carefully slide the tip of an opening pick under the ambient light sensor cable at the top left corner of the logic board and the lift the cable to disconnect it.

Step 9
Disassembling the display

  • Remove the display assembly
  • After removing the display place it on a clean, straight surface.
  • Warning: Do not touch the TrueDepth camera, grounding Springs or near parts.

Step 10
Unscrew the speaker

  • Use Philips screwdriver to remove four screws on the bottom holding the loudspeaker in its place.

  • There are:

  • - One 2.7 mm-long screw

  • - Three 2 mm-long screws

  • After removing the screws take the speaker out with tweezers

Step 11
Removing the speaker

  • There is a plastic buffer adhered to the top edges of the speaker and Taptic engine.
  • Lift the bottom edge of the speaker so you can grab it with your fingers and then peel the speaker from the plastic buffer on its top edge to remove it

Step 12
Disconnect, unfasten and remove taptic engine

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the Taptic engine press connector.

Then use a Philips screwdriver and remove two 2 mm-log screws that secure the Taptic engine and remove it.

Step 13
Locate and remove adhesive pull tabs

  • Locate 3 adhesive pull tabs holding the battery in its place. There should be 1 on top and 2 on bottom of the battery.

  • Using spudger carefully push the tabs away from battery so you can hold them using tweezer or your fingers

  • Warning: Do not damage the battery. Damaged battery can leak dangerous chemicals or even catch on fire!

  • When you stretch these strips they will loose their stickiness.

  • If these strips still hold tight you can apply couple drops of isopropyl alcohol to soften the adhesives, especially if the phone is old.

  • Hold the strips between tweezers or your fingers and pull them away from battery at low angle

  • Hold the phone by its sides do not press it down on the battery!

  • If the strip breaks don’t worry:

  • A) If you can see the strip, try pulling it again

  • B) If not try other strips and proceed to next step

Step 14
Removing the battery

  • When all the strips are out or you can’t reach them anymore.

  • Try pulling the battery out.
  • If you are having trouble removing the battery apply few drops of isopropyl alcohol under the edge of the battery near the broken strips and let it weaken the adhesive. After minute try to lift the battery with Spudger.
  •
  • Never try to lever the battery out, deform or puncture the battery with any pry tool. Instead, apply a few more drops of alcohol to further weaken the adhesive.

Step 15
Placing the battery

  • Place the new battery in the phone exactly like the old one was.

Make sure to uncover the new adhesive strips.

Step 16
Removing old adhesive around the edges of the iPhone

  • Remove the old adhesive around the edges of the iPhone using the spudger tool.

Step 17
Applying new adhesive around the edges of the display frame

  • Apply new adhesive around the edges of the iPhone.
  • Reconnect the battery through the reverse process.
  • The new adhesive will ensure the iPhone's resistance to water and dust.
  • Before placing the new display on the iPhone make sure to remove the protective foil.

  • Opening your iPhone will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

Step 18
Reassembling the iPhone

  • Install back the old LCD display.
  • Also check the phone for excess screws and small parts that may be stuck in the body of phone and remove them.
  • When reassembling the phone back, follow these instructions in reverse order from step 8.
  • After reassembly, perform a forced restart. This may help prevent any possible issues.
