If your iPhone 16 Pro Max screen is cracked, not responding to touch, or not showing a picture when your phone is powered on, use this repair guide to restore your iPhone to working order with a new screen.

Important information before replacing the screen

1. Drain the iPhone to below 25% as a fully charged Li-ion battery can catch fire or explode if its protective layers are accidentally breached.

2. Sensor assembly attached to the back of the old screen is factory paired with your individual iPhone, so you must transfer it from the old screen to the new screen during any screen replacement. It includes a flood illuminator, which is part of the biometric security feature Face ID.

3. If Face ID is damaged or replaced, it will stop working, so be careful not to damage any of these components during this procedure. In case of damage, only Apple or an Apple authorized technician can restore the Apple ID function.

4. Opening your iPhone 16 Pro Max will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone 16 Pro Max will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

5. Wear protective glasses to prevent eye injury during the repair.

6. Organize screws during the repair to prevent mixing them up, which could lead to damage to the iPhone 16 Pro Max by using the wrong screw in a thread.

7. The True Tone feature is disabled after a screen replacement, even when using an original Apple screen. Additionally, your iPhone 16 Pro Max may temporarily display a warning about the "authenticity" of the screen.

8. After replacing the screen, a message "Important Message" will be displayed on the screen.

- The message simply informs that the original display has been replaced with a new one.

- The message has no impact on the device's performance.

- It appears on the lock screen for 4 days, then in the settings.

This is caused by the screen replacement not being authorized by Apple's official software, and the part was not paired with the motherboard.

Apple trying to achieve to ensure that users have their devices repaired at authorized service centers, which use original Apple parts, accessories, and software.

Tips for Getting Started

Highlight 3 mm on the pick or card.

Do not insert the pick or card more than 3 mm, as you could damage internal components.

If your iPhone 16 Plus old screen is cracked, cover it with adhesive tape to prevent injuries during the repair.

If you are unable to attach the suction cup in the following steps, use a strong piece of tape (such as duct tape) and lift the screen.

Do not put your iPhone 16 Pro Max in the microwave!!

Step 1
Preparation of iPhone 16 Pro Max

Let your phone’s battery level drop below 25% to reduce the risk of a lithium-ion battery hazard.

Disconnect any cables from your device.

Press and hold the power button along with either volume button, then slide to turn off your phone.

Step 2
Unfastening the Pentalobe Screws

Use a P2 pentalobe screwdriver to take out the two 7.4 mm screws located on either side of the charging port.

Step 3
Opening the screen

The screen can be opened in two different ways:

The first method is using a suction cup.

The second method is using a securing tool, which is safer.

Step 4
Securing tool - Stabilizing the Back Glass

This step shows how to use the securing tool, a tool designed to simplify the opening process.

If you’re not using the securing tool, skip ahead for an alternative method.

The securing tool creates suction on both the screen and back glass. To ensure a smooth opening, the back glass must be secured with tape.

Cut two strips of tape and apply them along the longer edges of the iPhone 16 Plus.

Fold the tape over the back glass to hold it in place.

Ensure the tape only secures the back glass and does not overlap onto the screen.

Step 5
Securing tool - Attach the securing tool

Pull the handle on the securing tool backward to release and unlock the arms.

Position your phone with the screen facing upward.

Slide the securing tool arms over the right edge of the phone, ensuring one suction cup is on the screen and the other is on the back glass. Align them near the bottom edge.

Place a small box or similar object under the phone to keep it level while secured between the securing tool arms.

Press the suction cups together to create a firm grip.

If the securing tool struggles to hold onto your phone due to a smooth surface, apply some tape to increase traction.

Step 6
Securing tool - Create a Separation Under the Screen

Push the handle forward to secure the arms in place.

Rotate the handle one full turn (360 degrees) or until you see the suction cups begin to stretch.

While the cups stretch, ensure they remain aligned vertically. If they keep sliding out of position, remove the securing tool and apply tape to improve adhesion.

If tape isn’t available, try cleaning the suction cups with your hands and warming them slightly to enhance their grip.

Step 7
Securing tool - Inserting an Opening Pick

Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to warm the bottom edge of the screen until it's warm to the touch.

Avoid overheating, as excessive heat can damage the battery.

Allow about a minute for the adhesive to soften and create a slight gap.

If no gap forms, apply additional heat and turn the handle a quarter rotation. Let the securing tool apply steady pressure.

Once a gap appears, carefully insert an opening pick.

Remove the securing tool by pulling the tabs on the suction cups.

Step 8
Suction cup - Bottom edge

Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to gently warm the bottom edge of the screen until it feels warm to the touch.

Attach a suction cup to the bottom edge of the screen.

With one hand stabilizing the frame, firmly pull up on the suction cup to create a small gap between the screen and the frame.

Carefully slide the tip of an opening pick into the gap.

Important Screen Handling Tips

While cutting through the adhesive to separate the screen, avoid inserting your opening pick deeper than 3 mm to prevent damage to sensitive components:

A pair of fragile cables linking the screen to the phone—one positioned just above the Action button and another located roughly midway between the volume down button and the phone’s bottom edge.

Several spring contacts surrounding the phone’s perimeter.

Step 9
Suction cup - Right edge

Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to gently heat the right edge of the screen until it becomes warm to the touch.

Keep your opening pick no deeper than 3 mm to prevent damage to the spring contacts.

Glide the opening pick along the bottom right corner and continue up the right edge of the screen to break the adhesive and disengage the metal clip.

As you move past the clip, you'll notice an audible click and slight release.

Step 10
Suction cup - Top edge

Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to apply heat to the top edge of the screen until it feels warm to the touch.

Keep your pick no deeper than 3 mm to prevent damage to the spring contacts.

Slide the pick around the top right corner and along the top edge to break the adhesive seal and release the two metal clips.

Step 11
Suction cup - Left edge

Use a heat gun or a hair dryer to heat the left side of the screen until it feels warm to the touch.

Keep your pick no deeper than 3 mm to prevent damage to the screen cables and spring contacts.

Glide the pick along the left edge of the screen, breaking the remaining adhesive and freeing the last two metal clips.

Step 12
Lifting the screen

By this stage, the screen should be separated from the frame. If it still seems attached, carefully run your pick along the edges again to check for any remaining adhesive or stuck clips.

Gently lift the screen upwards until the clips along the longer sides detach from the frame.

Rotate the screen over the left side of the iPhone and lay it flat on your workspace

Step 13
Taking off the connector covers

Use a Y000 tri-point screwdriver to unscrew the two 1.3 mm screws that secure the cover for the front sensor and display.

Step 14
Taking off the front sensor cover

Use tweezers to raise the front sensor cover to a 90-degree angle and detach it from its slot on the logic board.

Carefully lift it out of the slot and remove it.

When reassembling:

Position the cover at a 90-degree angle to reattach it to the hook before pressing it flat against the connector.

Step 15
Taking off the screen connector cover

Using tweezers gently lift the screen connector cover at an angle to unclip it from its position on the logic board.

Carefully remove the cover from its slot.

When reassembling:

Angle the cover slightly downward to reconnect it to the hook before pressing it flat against the connector.

Step 16
Detaching the screen connection

Use the spudger tip to gently lift and detach the screen connector.

Do the same for the front sensor connector.

When reassembling:

Carefully line up the connector with its socket and press it down gently with your finger—starting on one side, then the other—until it clicks. Avoid forcing it in. If it’s difficult, adjust its position and try again.

Step 17
Taking out the screen

Gently lift the screen from the frame and set it aside.

When putting it back together, use new adhesive to attach your new LCD screen.

Handle the frame with care to avoid damaging the spring contacts during cleaning.

Step 18
Removing the flex cable assembly from the old screen

Use Phillips screwdriver to remove one screw that is holding the bracket.

Use tweezers to put away the bracket.

With spudger disconnect the flex cable assembly.

Next use a heat gun or a hair dryer to weaken the adhesive that is holding the assembly on the old screen.

Grab the assembly with tweezers or with your fingers and separate it from the old screen.

Step 19
Installing the assembly on the new screen

Position the assembly connector on the right place right under the front camera on the new LCD screen.

Use your fingers to press the connector in its slot.

Next press down and hold the assembly in its place on the new LCD screen so it is on the same place as on the old screen.

Step 20
Removing old adhesive around the edges of the iPhone

Remove all of the old adhesive around the inside edges of the iPhone using the spudger.

Step 21
Applying new adhesive around the edges of the display frame

Apply new LCD adhesive around the edges of the iPhone.

The new adhesive will ensure the iPhone's resistance to water and dust.

Opening your iPhone will breach its water-resistant seal, so have a replacement seal ready before starting this step. Without a new seal, your iPhone will not be water-resistant, and there's a higher likelihood of dust or moisture ingress.

Step 22
Reassembling the iPhone 16 Pro Max

Install the new LCD screen for iPhone 16 Pro Max

When reassembling:

iPhone 16 Pro Max back to its original state, follow these instructions in reverse order.

After reassembly, perform a forced restart. This may help prevent some issues.
