If your MacBook display is damaged, not responding properly, or not showing an image, you can use this guide to replace the faulty display with a new one and restore your device's functionality.

Important information before replacing the display

1. Back up your data – Before starting any repair, it’s essential to back up your data to avoid any potential loss. You can back up your files to a cloud storage service or you can back up your data to an external hard drive.

2. Turn Off the MacBook and Disconnect it from Power – Before starting, unplug your MacBook from the power source and turn it off to avoid the risk of short circuits or other damage. After opening the MacBook be sure to disconnect the battery too so it doesn’t get powered on accidentally.

3. Be Careful with Cables and Connectors – The display is connected to other components via cables. Be cautious when disconnecting to avoid damaging connectors or cables, which could cause functionality issues. For best results use spudger when disconnecting the cables.

4. Use an Antistatic Mat – Electronic components can be sensitive to static electricity. Use an antistatic mat and wrist strap to minimize the risk of damage.

5. Wear Protective Gear – During the display replacement, wear protective gear to avoid injuries when handling sharp or small parts.

6. Organize Screws and Small Components Carefully keep screws and parts in separate places during disassembly to prevent mixing them up or losing them. Using a screw organizer can be very helpful.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1
Unscrew the screws holding the bottom cover

Before beginning this repair, disable the Auto Boot option on your MacBook.

Auto Boot activates your Mac when you open the screen and could be unintentionally activated during disassembly.

For MacBooks that have Big Sur v11.1 or later, turning off Auto Boot may not be effective. You can continue with the steps, but remember to disconnect the battery as soon as you can access it.

1. Fully power down and unplug your MacBook charger before you start. Close the screen and flip the laptop over so it’s upside-down.

2. With a T5 screwdriver, remove these screws:

Two 7.9 mm screws

Two 7.1 mm screws

Six 2.6 mm screws

During the repair

Carefully track each screw to ensure it’s returned to its original position, preventing potential damage to your MacBook.

Step 2
Taking off the lower case

1. Insert your opening tool between the display and the lower case, then separate them.

2. After creating enough space use your fingers and pull the case upward to detach it.

3. Take off the whole lower case.

To reattach the lower case

Align it properly and press down firmly to secure the two hidden clips underneath. You should feel and hear them click into place.

Step 3
Unpluging the battery

Use tweezers to unstick the tape covering the battery connector just enough to reveal the connector underneath it.

With spudger gently push the battery connector parallel to the logic board and disconnect it from socket.

Step 4
Unpluging the antenna cables

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the 1.4 mm screw that holds the antenna cable cover in place.

Remove the antenna cable cover.

When reassembling the antenna cable cover, ensure the side with the key aligns towards the hinge side of the MacBook Air.

Use tweezers to remove the antenna cable cover.

Using tweezers, grasp the antenna connector near its base.

Gently pull upwards to disconnect the cable.

Perform the same process for the second antenna cable.

Step 5
Disconnecting the display cable

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two 1.5 mm screws holding the display cable connector cover in place.

Remove the display cable connector cover.

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently lift the display cable connector off the antenna board to disconnect it.

When reconnecting

Carefully align the connector and press down on one side until it snaps into place.

Then repeat the process on the other side.

Avoid pressing on the middle. Misalignment can cause the pins to bend, leading to permanent damage.

Step 6
Unscrewing the antenna bar screws

Use a T5 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the six screws holding the antenna bar in place:

Four 7.4 mm silver screws

Two 4.7 mm black screws

Step 7
Taking out the antenna bar

Place the pointed tip of a spudger into the space between the antenna bar and the display hinge.

Gently pivot the spudger against the hinge to lift the antenna bar at one end.

Repeat the same for the other side of the antenna bar. Use your fingers to carefully lift the antenna bar straight up and away from the case.

The antenna bar is lightly attached with adhesive, so you may need to apply some force to loosen it.

Guide the antenna board through the opening in the center of the antenna bar.

Take care not to put stress on the antenna bar’s ribbon cables.

Finally, remove the antenna bar.

When reassembling

Make sure the display cable is not trapped under the antenna bar.

Step 8
Take out the four hinge screws

Use a T8 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the three 4.9 mm screws on each hinge (six screws in total).

Step 9
Open the MacBook completely

Open the screen of the MacBook as wide as possible.

Step 10
Removing the screen

Lift the MacBook and gently close the display until it forms about a 90-degree angle.

As you move the screen toward the case, the hinges should begin to shift slightly out of the case.

While keeping the display at a 90-degree angle, slide it downward, holding the rest of the MacBook steady, allowing the hinges to come out of the bottom of the case.

Carefully remove the display.

To install new screen follow these orders in reverse order.

When installing the replacement screen, the MacBook may not start until you plug in the power supply.
