If your MacBook screen is damaged, not responding properly, or not showing an image, you can use this guide to replace the faulty screen with a new screen and restore your device's functionality.

Important information before replacing the screen

1. Back up your data – Before starting any repair, it’s essential to back up your data to avoid any potential loss. You can back up your files to a cloud storage service or you can back up your data to an external hard drive.

2. Turn Off the MacBook and Disconnect it from Power – Before starting, unplug your MacBook from the power source and turn it off to avoid the risk of short circuits or other damage. After opening the MacBook be sure to disconnect the battery too so it doesn’t get powered on accidentally.

3. Be Careful with Cables and Connectors – The display is connected to other components via cables. Be cautious when disconnecting to avoid damaging connectors or cables, which could cause functionality issues. For best results use spudger when disconnecting the cables.

4. Use an Antistatic Mat – Electronic components can be sensitive to static electricity. Use an antistatic mat and wrist strap to minimize the risk of damage.

5. Wear Protective Gear – During the display replacement, wear protective gear to avoid injuries when handling sharp or small parts.

6. Organize Screws and Small Components Carefully keep screws and parts in separate places during disassembly to prevent mixing them up or losing them. Using a screw organizer can be very helpful.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1
Getting your MacBook Air ready for disassembly

Before starting, make sure the battery is discharged to below 25% to minimize the risk of fire or injury, as puncturing a charged lithium-ion battery can be hazardous.

Turn off your MacBook Air completely and disconnect any attached cables.

Shut the display, then turn the laptop over so the bottom faces upward. Leave the lid closed until you have safely disconnected the battery.

Step 2
Removing the bottom case

With a PL4 Pentalobe screwdriver, take out the four 6.4 mm screws holding the lower case in place:

-Two screws with shorter threads near the hinges

-Two screws with longer threads closer to the front edge of the MacBook

During this process, keep each screw organized and ensure they are returned to their original positions when reassembling.

Step 3
Placing an opening pick

Attach a suction cup to the center of the front edge of the lower case.

Pull firmly and steadily on the suction cup to create a small gap between the lower case and the frame.

Once a gap forms, insert an opening pick into it.

Step 4
Disengaging the snapping clips

In this step, you will feel and hear four clips disengage. If one clip doesn't release, push the opening pick in further and try again.

Move the pick toward the bottom-right corner to release the first clip.

Continue sliding the pick around the corner and up along the right edge to release the second clip.

Place the opening pick into the gap you created earlier with the suction cup.

Slide the pick toward the bottom-left corner and continue moving it upward along the left edge to release the final two snapping clips.

Step 5
Detaching the sliding tabs

The back edge of the MacBook is secured by four sliding tabs that hold the lower case tightly.

Removing these tabs requires significant force, so wearing gloves is recommended to avoid injury from the sharp edges of the case.

Keep the lower case flat and carefully pull it straight away from the back edge, working one corner at a time to release the sliding tabs.

Warning: Avoid lifting upward until the cover is fully detached!

Step 6
Taking off the lower case

Take off the lower case.

When reassembling:

Position the lower case and align the sliding tabs with the screw heads they fit over. Press down while sliding the lower case toward the back edge to secure the tabs. The sliding will stop once the tabs are properly engaged.

If one side aligns but the other shifts out of place, adjust both sides to ensure there’s no gap along the back edge.

Once the lower case sits flush with the frame, press firmly around the edges to lock the four snapping clips into place.

Each clip will make a noticeable click as it secures.

Step 7
Taking off the battery connector cover

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to unscrew the two 1.5 mm screws holding the cover in place.

In some cases, screw variations may require a T4 Torx screwdriver instead of a T3. Be mindful of this possibility whenever working with T3 screws during this repair.

Once the screws are removed, take off the battery connector cover with tweezers.

Step 8
Detaching the battery

Use a pick to carefully lift and disconnect the battery press connector.

When reconnecting:

Position the connector over the socket and gently press down on one side until it snaps into place. Then press down on the opposite side. You may need a few attempts to properly align it.

Step 9
Taking off the display cable cover foam

Carefully lift and remove the foam pad from the lower display cable cover to uncover a hidden screw.

Step 10
Detaching the cable covers

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the nine 1.5 mm screws holding the four metal covers in place.

Take off the four metal covers:

- Two speaker cable covers

- One display cable cover

- One antenna cable cover

Next, remove the four screws securing the upper display cable cover:

- Two 2.5 mm P2 Pentalobe screws

- Two 2.5 mm T3 Torx screws

When reassembling:

Ensure the Pentalobe screws are properly threaded into the display cable securing bracket.

Take off the upper display cable cover and the plastic securing bracket.

And confirm the top edge of the upper display cable cover slides under the securing bracket.

Step 11
Disconnecting the cables

Use the pointed tip of a spudger to carefully lift and disconnect both display cable press connectors.

Detach the left and right speaker press connectors.

Using tweezers, grip the first antenna connector near its base.

Pull directly upward to detach the cable.

Antenna connectors on the logic board are delicate. Be sure to lift straight up and avoid pulling them to the side.

Repeat the process to disconnect the second antenna cable.

When reconnecting:

Align the antenna connector with its socket and press down gently using the flat end of a spudger. You should hear it snap into place. It may take several attempts to align the connector correctly.

Step 12
Taking off the hinge covers

These screws are prone to stripping, so apply firm, consistent downward pressure when unscrewing.

Use a T3 Torx screwdriver to remove the two 2.6 mm screws that secure the left and right hinge covers.

Using blunt-nose tweezers, grasp the left hinge cover.

Pull the cover downward toward the bottom of the laptop and then upward to release it from its recess.

Lift and remove the hinge cover completely.

Repeat the same process to remove the right hinge cover.

Step 13
Detaching the speakers

Use a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the six screws holding the left and right speakers in place:

Four 5.6 mm screws (two per speaker)

Two 3.5 mm screws (one per speaker)

Carefully lift each speaker straight upward and take them out.

Step 14
Repositioning the lid angle sensor

Using the pointed end of a spudger, carefully lift the lid angle sensor away from the left hinge to expose the screw located beneath it.

Step 15
Detaching the lid angle sensor

Use a T1 Torx screwdriver to remove the 1.5 mm screw that secures the lid angle sensor cable to the left hinge.

Step 16
Loosen the hinges

Use a T8 Torx screwdriver to remove the two outer 4.3 mm screws from each hinge (a total of four screws).

Keep the center screw on each hinge intact for now.

Step 17
Opening the laptop and positioning it upright

Open your MacBook Air all the way.

If you intend to reuse the screen, place duct tape over the glass near each hinge to protect it from scratches during the next step.

Stand the laptop up on its side.

Step 18
Detaching the remaining hinge screws

Use one hand to hold both halves of the laptop in place to prevent them from separating or tipping over.

Begin with the bottom hinge, and use a T8 Torx screwdriver to remove the 4.3 mm screw that secures both hinges (a total of two screws).

Step 19
Reassembly instructions

When reassembling:

Start by installing the hinge screws without fully tightening them. Adjust the screen to ensure it's properly centered and aligned on both sides before tightening the screws.

If you hear a click or snap when opening the screen, loosen the hinge screws and realign the screen. Ensure the screen isn’t positioned too far forward, as this can cause it to catch on the body when opening and closing.

Step 20
Removing the hinges from the frame

Ensure a secure grip on both the screen and the main body, as either part could come apart and fall.

While holding the main body in place, gently push the screen away and guide both hinges out of their positions in the frame.

For reassembly:

Fully open the hinges.

Place both the main body and the new screen on their sides.

Ensure the parts are oriented correctly so the new screen will close towards the keyboard.

Carefully position the hinges into their respective slots in the frame.

Step 21
Reassembling the MacBook

Follow these steps in reverse order to reassemble your MacBook.
