- If it’s damaged (cracked frame, torn material, loose seams).
- If it’s saturated with dust, smoke, or odors and cannot be cleaned.
- If the air purifier shows reduced performance or airflow.
- If the indicator light on your air purifier signals filter replacement.
- If you notice unusual smells coming from the device – often caused by an old carbon filter.
How to clean an air purifier filter
Air purifier filters can be washable or non-washable, depending on the model. Always check the product description. If it does not explicitly say “washable”, do not wash it.
Cleaning methods for non-washable filters (HEPA / dust filters):
- The safest method is to blow out the filter with low-pressure compressed air.
- Clean first against the airflow direction, then along the pleats.
- Avoid strong pressure – too much force may tear the fibers and reduce filtration efficiency.
If you don’t have compressed air:
- Gently dust off the surface with a soft brush.
- You may also lightly tap the filter on a flat surface to release dust (never hit the edges!).
Do not wash or soak non-washable HEPA filters.
Water will permanently damage the filtration fibers.Cleaning methods for washable filters:
Some pre-filters and coarse dust filters are washable.
- Rinse it with lukewarm water (never hot).
- First against the airflow direction.
- Then along the pleats from the opposite side.
- Let it dry completely for at least 24 hours before reinstalling.
- Do not dry on a radiator or in an oven – heat can deform the frame.
- Washable filters can normally be cleaned up to 2–3 times, then they should be replaced.
Important
Both washable and non-washable filters have similar lifespans.
The difference is only in the recommended cleaning method, not in durability. -
